Winter is now in full swing, and with temperatures dropping and snow falling (at least in some places), it’s tempting to want to stay indoors where it’s nice and cozy. But for parents with children, it’s not always easy to keep their young ones entertained during the winter months. Fortunately, there are plenty of engaging ways to keep children of all ages amused and stimulated—especially if they’re fans of board games or Lego sets! Better yet, these ideas don’t involve tablets, smartphones, and video games—meaning if the power goes out, or you simply want your kiddos to spend time away from their devices, you’re still golden. Keep reading for a few exciting ideas from your local games shop.

1. Lego Building Challenges

Lego building is not only fun, but it also promotes creativity, problem-solving skills, and even spatial awareness. You can have your kids go the traditional route and follow the instructions to a particular set—or you can have them go the innovative route and see what inventions and creations they come up with! Be sure to set up a building station with everything they’ll need: buckets of bricks, a sturdy chair, and of course, plenty of room to create their universe. Don’t hesitate to sit and join them, either—it’s always more fun to work as a team!

2. Family Board Game Night

If you and your family have a collection of board games, there’s no better time than now to bust them out for a family game night. The great thing about these games is that there’s generally something out there for everyone, regardless of age or skill level. If your kids have a favorite game, sit and play it with them—they might even let you win a round or two! You might also try out something brand new that catches your eye; in the last few years, board games have seen a resurgence in popularity, leading to all kinds of new and exciting additions.

3. Organize Their Trading Cards

For kids, part of the fun when it comes to trading cards is having a way to show off all their coolest, most prized cards. Whether your kid is a Pokémon card fanatic, or they’ve acquired a taste for something else like Magic: The Gathering, they need a way to showcase and store their collection. You might help them organize all of their rare cards in a binder, storage bins, card sleeves, or whatever else works for them. That way, when the weather warms up and they’re out and about, they’ll have a way to transport, trade, and play with their cards. Plus, you’ll probably put a smile on their face if you sit with them and help sort through all of their cards.

4. Mega Movie Marathon

Sometimes on particularly cold days, there’s truly nothing better than snuggling up on the couch with your kids and the family dog and watching a few of your favorite movies. Let them pick out what movies they want to watch from their own collection, or maybe there’s something on a streaming service they’ve been wanting to watch with you. Or you might instead introduce them to some of the classics from your childhood that are too important to miss out on. Be sure to dim the lights, set out plenty of blankets, and don’t forget the popcorn!
